BCAA vs EAA: Which Do You Actually Need?

Walk into any supplement store and you'll see walls of BCAA products. But lately, EAAs are getting more shelf space. What's going on?

The basics

BCAAs (Branched-Chain Amino Acids)

Three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They're called "branched-chain" because of their molecular structure. Leucine is the star here. It's the primary trigger for muscle protein synthesis.

EAAs (Essential Amino Acids)

Nine amino acids your body can't make: the three BCAAs plus histidine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and tryptophan. "Essential" means you need to get them from food.

The science says...

Here's where it gets interesting. A 2017 study by Jackman et al. compared muscle protein synthesis after taking BCAAs versus a placebo. BCAAs increased synthesis by 22%. Sounds good, right?

But there's a catch. To actually build muscle, you need all 9 essential amino acids. BCAAs can trigger the process, but without the other 6, it's like revving an engine with no fuel.

When BCAAs make sense

There's one scenario where BCAAs have an edge: fasted training. If you train in the morning without eating, BCAAs can reduce muscle breakdown during the session.

But honestly? Just having a protein shake before training does the same job and gives you all the amino acids.

When EAAs make sense

If you're going to supplement amino acids at all, EAAs are the better choice. You get the leucine trigger plus all the building blocks to actually use it.

Or just eat protein

Here's the thing. If you eat enough protein (1.6-2.2g per kg bodyweight), you're already getting plenty of all amino acids. A scoop of whey has more EAAs than most EAA supplements, plus it's cheaper per gram.

My verdict

Skip BCAAs. They're an incomplete solution to a problem that whey protein already solves.

EAAs? Maybe useful if you train fasted. But for most people eating adequate protein, they're not necessary.
