Cheapest Whey Protein Per Gram UK 2026: The Real Rankings

The price tag lies. A £40 bag can be better value than a £25 one — it all depends on how much actual protein you're getting. So we did the maths.

We've ranked the most popular UK whey proteins by their price per gram of protein. Not per gram of powder — per gram of protein.

How we calculated it

Price per gram protein = Total price ÷ (Servings × Protein per serving)

A £50 bag with 100 servings of 25g protein = £50 ÷ 2500g = £0.020 per gram.

The cheapest whey proteins UK 2026

Based on current prices (March 2026) without any discount codes:

  1. Bulk Pure Whey Protein (2.5kg): £0.027/g — £51.83 with 23g per serving. The maths just works.
  2. Myprotein Impact Whey (2.5kg): £0.032/g at full price. But they run 40-50% sales constantly — at £37, that's £0.019/g.
  3. XXL Nutrition Perfect Whey (2kg): £0.032/g — Dutch brand, ships to UK, solid 24g per scoop.
  4. Bulk Hero Whey (2.275kg): £0.035/g — their mid-range option with better flavours.
  5. Zumub 100% Whey Isolate (1kg): £0.035/g — isolate at concentrate prices. If you're lactose sensitive, this is the one.

The premium tax

Some brands charge significantly more:

  • Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard (2.27kg): ~£0.048/g
  • Dymatize ISO100 (2.2kg): ~£0.050/g
  • Grenade Hydra 6 (1.8kg): ~£0.055/g

Is it worth it? The protein quality difference is minimal. You're mostly paying for brand, taste, and marketing.

Concentrate vs Isolate: the real cost

Isolate has 90% protein vs concentrate's 80%. But it often costs 30-50% more. Quick check:

  • If isolate costs 40% more but only has 12% more protein → concentrate wins on value
  • If you're lactose intolerant → isolate might be worth the premium

Sale timing matters

Myprotein runs massive sales on:

  • Black Friday (November)
  • January sales
  • Easter
  • Payday (end of month)

At 50% off, Myprotein becomes the cheapest option at £0.016/g. Set a price alert or just check monthly.

What to watch out for

  • Serving sizes vary: Some brands use 25g scoops, others 30g. Always compare protein per serving, not powder per serving.
  • Amino spiking: Cheap proteins sometimes add cheap amino acids (glycine, taurine) to inflate the protein number. Check for "protein blend" in ingredients.
  • Shipping costs: Free delivery thresholds vary. Bulk is free over £35, Myprotein over £45.

Bottom line

For pure value: Bulk Pure Whey or Myprotein during sales. For lactose-free value: Zumub Isolate. For premium without overpaying: ESN Designer Whey.
