Creatine vs Pre-Workout: Which Do You Actually Need?
You're standing in the supplement aisle (or scrolling through an online shop at midnight, let's be honest) and the same question keeps coming up: should you buy creatine or pre-workout? They both promise better performance. They both come in tubs with loud packaging and bold claims. Creatine doesn't hit you like caffeine. You won't feel a rush. It works over days and weeks as your muscle stores fill up. Most people take 3-5g daily, and after about 2-4 weeks you're fully saturated. No timing tricks needed. Morning, evening, with food, without food. Doesn't matter much. Some people do a loading phase (20g per day for 5-7 days) to saturate faster, but it's not required. You get to the same place either way.

- Cost: Creatine monohydrate runs about £0.03-0.05 per serving. Pre-workout is typically £0.50-1.50 per serving. Over a year, that difference adds up fast.

When Creatine Makes More Sense

That's about as strong an endorsement as you'll get in nutrition science.
When Pre-Workout Makes More Sense
Pre-workout shines when you need an immediate boost. Training after a long day at work? Didn't sleep great? Just not feeling it? That's where pre-workout earns its place.
It also makes sense if you:

- Struggle with motivation or focus during sessions

Some pre-workouts already contain creatine (usually 1-3g per serving). Check the label. If yours includes creatine, you might just need to top up to reach the 5g daily total with a separate creatine supplement on the side.
If you're going to stack them, keep it simple: take your creatine whenever is convenient (many people just throw it in their pre-workout shake or morning drink), and save the pre-workout for days when you genuinely need the boost. Not every session. Your rest days still need creatine, but they definitely don't need 300mg of caffeine.
What About Just Coffee?
Honestly? A strong coffee 30 minutes before training does most of what pre-workout does. The main active ingredient is caffeine anyway. You miss out on beta-alanine and citrulline, but caffeine is doing the heavy lifting in most formulas.
A cup of filter coffee has about 95mg of caffeine. Double that if you brew it strong or go for an espresso-based drink. That's enough for a noticeable performance bump without spending £25-35 on a tub of flavoured powder. Something to think about if you're watching your spending. Plus, coffee has its own antioxidant benefits and doesn't come with artificial sweeteners or colours.
The Bottom Line
If you can only pick one: go with creatine. The evidence is overwhelming, it's dirt cheap, has no tolerance build-up, and it works whether you "feel" it or not. You can always have a coffee before hard sessions if you want that extra kick.
If budget isn't an issue and you want both, grab a straightforward creatine monohydrate and a pre-workout with properly dosed ingredients (at least 200mg caffeine, 3.2g beta-alanine, 6g citrulline). Skip the proprietary blends that hide their dosages behind vague labels.
