If you combine basketball with regular strength training, play at a competitive level or sit in a dense game schedule, moving towards 1.8 to 2.0 grams per kilo makes sense. Taller players need more, in absolute terms
Protein guidelines are given per kilo of body weight for a reason. A 100 kilo forward simply carries more muscle tissue to maintain than a 75 kilo guard, so the same relative target lands at a much higher absolute number. If you are tall and still growing, that gap is bigger still, because you are building new tissue on top of repairing what training breaks down. In practice this means bigger players usually need to plan their eating rather than hope it happens, and a shake becomes a more useful tool simply because chewing 180 grams of protein a day takes time.
Spreading intake across the day works best
Your muscles do not only recover in the hour after a game, the process runs for one to two days afterwards. Do not forget the rest of your diet
Protein is important, but your explosiveness comes largely from your carbohydrate stores. A normal portion of rice, pasta, bread or potatoes with your meals keeps energy levels stable through long practices and games.
