Algae oil (omega-3)
Plant-based source of EPA and DHA, grown from microalgae instead of extracted from fish.
What the research shows
Shown, with a clear condition or a limited scope.
Bernstein (2012) saw lower triglycerides with algal DHA alongside a slight rise in both HDL and LDL cholesterol. Chamorro (2026) confirmed that vegetarians and vegans have lower EPA and DHA levels. Arterburn (2007) showed algal DHA is absorbed as well as DHA from other sources, in a study whose authors all worked for the producer.
Who it makes sense for: Vegans and vegetarians who eat no fish and want to top up their EPA and DHA status.
