Berberine

Alkaloid from plants such as barberry that lowers blood sugar.

What the research shows

Shown, with a clear condition or a limited scope.

Xie (2022) pooled 37 trials with 3048 patients with type 2 diabetes and saw blood sugar fall, largely based on Chinese databases. Guo (2021) saw comparable shifts in metabolic markers across 46 trials, with berberine often given alongside standard medication. These studies say nothing about healthy people or about weight loss.

Who it makes sense for: People with type 2 diabetes or raised blood sugar who use it alongside their treatment in consultation with their doctor.
