Chondroitin

Cartilage component, usually from bovine or shark cartilage and often combined with glucosamine.

What the research shows

No sound research in humans.

The Cochrane review by Singh (2015) saw a small reduction in pain that largely disappeared once only trials at low risk of bias were counted. Wandel (2010) reached the same picture and reported that commercially funded trials showed larger effects than independent ones. Meng (2023) found no convincing added benefit for the combination with glucosamine.

Who it makes sense for: Almost nobody: in the best-designed trials little of the pain effect remains.
