Vitamin K2
Fat-soluble vitamin, usually menaquinone-4 or menaquinone-7, involved in bone building and calcium handling.
What the research shows
Mixed or small evidence. The effect is uncertain.
Ma (2022) saw higher bone mineral density in postmenopausal osteoporosis, mainly in Japanese trials using menaquinone-4 and of varying quality. Diederichsen (2022) found no difference from placebo in people with aortic valve calcification. Zwakenberg (2019) likewise saw no reduction in vascular calcification in people with diabetes.
Who it makes sense for: Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis using it alongside calcium and vitamin D; in healthy adults no effect has been shown.
