You had what felt like a normal infection months ago, but the stairs still leave you out of breath and your dumbbells feel heavier than they should. Long COVID drags on energy, muscle and motivation. The question gets practical: does a daily whey shake help you climb back, or is it just another tub on the shelf?

Where whey actually helps

Whey delivers a high dose of leucine, the amino acid that flips the muscle protein synthesis switch most reliably. Resistance training is the strongest stimulus for rebuilding lost muscle, but the dose matters in long COVID. Start with very light loads or bodyweight, three short sessions per week of twenty to thirty minutes. Stop sessions while you still have something left in the tank. Push too hard and you risk a setback that can last days.

The Pavy Le Traon protocol used in space and bed rest research showed that short low intensity resistance sessions plus adequate protein recovered eighty to ninety percent of lost strength over eight to twelve weeks (PMID: 18458357). Apply this idea: small consistent sessions, with a shake within an hour of finishing, beat one heroic workout a week.

Daily target and how to hit it

For someone of 70 kilograms recovering from long COVID, a sensible target is around 120 to 150 grams of protein per day. Split into four feedings of roughly 30 to 40 grams works well. Sleep is when most of the repair happens. Aim for seven to nine hours and an earlier bedtime than your pre infection norm. Skip the late shake of you have trouble sleeping. Earlier in the day or with dinner is usually fine.

Who should be careful

People with chronic kidney disease should run protein targets past their nephrologist. Pregnant women, those with severe acute illness on top of long COVID, or anyone in active cardiac rehab should also check in with their team before pushing protein high.

Watch for post exertional malaise. If a workout leaves you crashed for more than 24 hours, the session was too hard. Whey will not protect you from this trap. Pacing and gradual loads do.

A simple recovery plan

Hit a daily protein target of around 1.8 to 2.0 grams per kilogram. Split it across four meals, with a whey shake filling at least one slot. Train two to three times a week with light resistance and short walks on other days. Sleep early, get sunlight when possible, and keep alcohol low. Track grip strength or how heavy your usual bag feels each week. Improvement usually shows up over weeks, not days.
