Nitrosigine in pre-workout: one of 87 variants contains it, at half the studied dose

Of the 87 pre-workout variants with a working Dutch shop link and a current price, exactly one contains Nitrosigine. That tub doses 750 mg per serving, half of the 1500 mg the ingredient was studied at. It costs 34.90 euro for 30 servings, so 1.16 euro per training. Counted on 13 October 2026: 36 products, 87 variants, every flavour separately, prices and doses from our own database.
A brand name on the label, no milligram figure
Nitrosigine is a patented form of arginine, bound to silicate and kept stable with inositol. Because it is a brand name, many labels carry the name without the amount. In our database the ingredient sits with the pump ingredients, at evidence level thin and 1500 mg as the studied dose. Plain arginine, the basis for comparison, is set at 3000 to 9000 mg. The manufacturer says the bound form is absorbed better, so less of it is needed.
What the three studies measure
- Kalman DS and others, 2015: safety, uptake in the body and measurable action in healthy men. PubMed 26504409
- Kalman D and others, 2016: cognitive tests in physically active adults. PubMed 27869715 This study was paid for by Nutrition 21, the company that owns the Nitrosigine brand, and two of the four authors work there.
- Rogers JM and others, 2020: a comparison of Nitrosigine and citrulline malate, with widening of blood vessels as the outcome. PubMed 32093766 The money came from the state of Arkansas and an honours programme at its university; the brand company paid only the publication costs.
The third study comes closest to what a gym user notices, with a measurement of the blood vessels. How a training itself feels appears in none of the three.
The sum for the one product
It is MuscleTech VaporX5 Next Gen, blue raspberry, 266 grams, 30 servings, with 750 mg Nitrosigine per serving. On 13 October 2026 that tub stood at 34.90 euro at bol.com, which works out at 1.16 euro per serving. The median in this market is 1.00 euro per serving, with 0.37 euro at the bottom and 2.50 euro at the top. For 1500 mg at a time you would take two servings and land at 2.33 euro per training, in the upper band.
In the American market we track two variants with the same ingredient, the same VaporX5 and a Nutricost pre-workout, both also at 750 mg. In none of the markets we follow does a product reach the studied dose.
What the catalogue offers instead
| Ingredient | Variants with it | Meets the lower bound | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citrulline | 64 | 42 | reasonable |
| Beta-alanine | 74 | 13 | reasonable |
| Arginine | 24 | 7 | thin |
| Nitrosigine | 1 | 0 | thin |
The lower bound we test against sits on the ingredient page itself, so a changed dose does not linger in twenty articles. A variant can contain more than one of these ingredients, so the column adds up to more than 87.
Anyone selecting on dose instead of on the name on the front has more to choose from than that one product.
What the figures do not say
We do not measure pump, blood flow during training, solubility or taste. The table shows which ingredients sit in a variant, in what amount, what a serving costs and how strong the evidence per ingredient is. A little over half of the Dutch pre-workouts appear with those figures in the catalogue.
