When to Take Whey Protein? Before or After Workout?
Does the timing of your protein shake matter? Spoiler: less than you think.
The Anabolic Window Myth
Years ago, we believed you had to consume protein within 30 minutes after training, or you'd miss out on muscle growth. This 'anabolic window' turned out to be much less important than we thought.
Recent research shows that total daily protein intake matters far more than exact timing. Your muscles recover for hours after training, not just in those first 30 minutes.
When Does Timing Actually Matter?
Before training
- If you haven't eaten for more than 4 hours
- For long workouts (>90 minutes)
- When training fasted (optional)
After training
- If your next meal is hours away
- After heavy strength training
- When training multiple times per day
Practical Advice
- Eat 1-3 hours before training a meal with protein
- Eat within 2-3 hours after training a meal or shake
- Spread your protein across 3-5 moments per day
- Focus on total — 1.6-2.2 grams per kg body weight
Best Times for a Shake
- Morning if you don't have time for breakfast
- Post-workout if your next meal is 2+ hours away
- Between meals as a snack to hit your daily goal
- Before bed (casein works better than whey here)
Conclusion
Don't stress about exact timing. Make sure you get enough protein per day and spread it reasonably throughout the day. A shake after your workout is convenient, but not magical.
