Whey vs Casein: When Should You Use Which?
Whey and casein both come from milk. Yet they behave differently in your body. Whey is absorbed quickly, casein slowly. But does that make a practical difference? And when do you use which?
The Difference in Absorption
Whey reaches your blood within 30-60 minutes after intake. Your amino acid levels spike quickly and then drop again. Useful when you have just trained and your muscles need amino acids.
Casein forms a gel in your stomach and is released gradually over 6-8 hours. No peak, but a constant supply. This makes it suitable for longer periods without eating.
When to Use Whey?
After training is the classic timing. Your muscles are sensitive to amino acids and whey delivers them quickly. But honestly? The difference with casein at this moment is small. Both stimulate protein synthesis.
As breakfast whey works well. Your body has fasted all night and can use a quick boost.
Between meals when you need a quick protein source and do not fancy food.
When to Use Casein?
Before bed is the logical choice. Res et al. (2012) found that 40g casein before night increased protein synthesis compared to a placebo. Your body has 8 hours without external supply, so slow-release protein is handy.
As meal replacement because it keeps you fuller longer. A casein shake controls your hunger better than whey.
Should You Buy Both?
Probably not. For most people, total protein intake over the day is more important than specific timing. If you eat enough protein via normal meals plus a whey shake, casein makes little difference.
Casein is mainly useful if:
- You often go long periods without eating (intermittent fasting)
- You struggle to get enough protein over the day
- You want to snack before bed with something low-calorie
Practical Tip
If you only have budget for one type: choose whey. It is more versatile, often cheaper, and the benefits of casein are marginal unless you have specific goals.
