Collagen type II

Undenatured type II collagen from chicken cartilage, given as 40 mg per day in every trial.

What the research shows

Mixed or small evidence. The effect is uncertain.

Lugo (2016) saw better WOMAC scores than placebo in knee osteoarthritis after 180 days, in a study where two of three authors worked for the brand owner. Schön (2022) reported greater pain-free knee flexion, run by a contract research organisation for the producer. Kumar (2023) could pool only a handful of trials and called the evidence limited.

Who it makes sense for: People with mild knee osteoarthritis still having symptoms after standard care who want to try it themselves.
