Inulin

Prebiotic fibre from chicory that reaches the colon undigested and is fermented there.

What the research shows

Shown, with a clear condition or a limited scope.

Hughes (2022) consistently saw more bifidobacteria in the gut, a shift that by itself is not symptom improvement. Nagy (2023) also saw slightly more frequent bowel movements, in a review whose first author works for an inulin producer. Wilson (2019) saw no benefit in IBS and more gas instead.

Who it makes sense for: People who want to improve their bowel habits and do not have irritable bowel syndrome.
