Selenium

Trace element that forms part of enzymes protecting cells against oxidative damage.

What the research shows

Mixed or small evidence. The effect is uncertain.

The Cochrane review by Vinceti (2018) found no lower cancer risk in randomised trials and saw more cases of type 2 diabetes among users. Huwiler (2024) saw lower thyroid antibodies in Hashimoto disease, a lab value that says nothing yet about symptoms. In well-fed people no benefit has been demonstrated.

Who it makes sense for: People with a low selenium intake, and possibly people with Hashimoto disease under medical supervision.
